Figure 1: Social Determinants of Health

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. They include factors like socioeconomic status, education, neighborhood and physical environment, employment, race, and social support networks, as well as access to health care (Figure 1). Vulnerable populations include the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, the uninsured, low-income children, the elderly, the homeless, those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and those with other chronic health conditions, including severe mental illness. The vulnerability of these populations are enhanced by the social detriments of health. These populations are at risk of poor physical, psychological, and/or social health. We need to work together to address health disparities in marginalized populations by addressing these factors!
